This page answers the questions we hear before the phone call: what a handyman can and can't do, what a visit looks like, what the common repairs cost, and what goes in our written quote.
Can a handyman handle a garage door repair
Some of it, yes. Lubricating rollers, tightening hardware and replacing weatherstripping are fine for a handy homeowner or a general handyman. The springs and lift cables are a different matter. The springs carry the weight of the door so the opener doesn't have to, and the cables are under constant load whenever the door moves. When one lets go, the door can drop fast, and people get hurt by weight they weren't expecting. Springs, cables and realigning the door in its track are work we do ourselves, and we don't recommend a first attempt at them.

What happens when we come out to fix a garage door
We disconnect the opener and lift the door by hand. A healthy door moves easily and stays where you leave it, both fully open and partway up. A door that binds, drags or drifts is pointing at a specific part. We inspect each roller and both lift cables, and whatever we find goes into the quote as a line item. If opening the job up turns up something that changes the scope, we stop and call you before going further.

A roller has come off the track
This is one of the more common calls we get. The door usually still moves, but it binds and grinds, and a roller riding outside the track can damage it. We take the weight off that section, guide the roller back into the track and check the hinge that held it. If the hinge is worn we replace it. If the track is bent, that section has to be brought back into line before the door will roll cleanly, and we tell you on the spot whether that is a quick fix or a bigger job.
When the door is badly damaged or the whole system is acting up
A door hit by a vehicle or a fallen branch often has damage in more than one place. A homeowner who thinks one roller is the problem may have a cracked hinge, a frayed cable and a track knocked out of square as well. We give you the full picture instead of fixing one symptom and leaving the rest to fail later. After a hailstorm, look over the panels and any glazing too, since May is the most active month locally.
Torsion spring replacement and lift cable repair or replacement each typically run $125 to $300. A job with several worn parts adds up from there. If patching part after part stops making sense, we'll say so. A new door is built from the ground up: frame prepped, vertical and horizontal tracks mounted, spring, pulley and cable system installed, door sections secured, opener connected. Under Oklahoma's 2024 Residential Code the door has to be wind-rated.
What we put in writing before we start
The quote is written and itemizes parts and labor for your door, separating what gets repaired from what gets replaced. If we find something unexpected, we call you with the updated scope. We don't start work until you've approved the written description and price.
